Basketball Plays

Many players look at some of the 'play's I'm developing like they aren't plays or aren't 'the real deal'.

Please encourage them to watch some of the FIBA women's games from the 2022 World Cup.   As I've mentioned, women's basketball is changing in play style.

Some teams, like the USA, should be ignored though - it appears they are using set plays with few shooters.  Germany is an example of a team that is working on the multi-shooter approach though.

- Players are responsible and responsive to on-court play.

- Only 1 space passing (if there are three players in a row A-B-C, player A with ball can and will only look to player B - the single space for fast accurate passes)

- Cycle through the offensive zone

- Form a 5 point house that ebbs and flows on defence.

- Spaced players on offense with players deep in the corners

Each of the entire games are about 2 hours.

Just look at the following points (again Germany/White - not USA)  Roughly 20 minutes to 24 minutes.

21:16  White #9&#7 pass in.  These are the Olympic level, international players.  Yet they still pass in short spacing passes on defence.

23:10.  USA passes 1 space to a perfect 2.  Because they had no other player open or in a cycling position #15/12 shot and missed.  There was no rebound.  They would make the exact same play and miss literally a minute later.  And again, throughout the game.

Watch white at 24:06 from when 13 passes ball while laying on court.

On defence.  13 to 12 to 0.  That's 3 passes on the defensive zone.  Instead of a single player 'running up with the ball' like in U13 or boys basketball.

Notice how 0 has the ball outside the key, in the lower corner of the court?  (24:17)

13 swings to that side to help if there is a pass back.

As 0 drives to key (and basket) #13 clears and the play isn't successful.  In this play, #0, #13 or #11 could have been the shooters.

Then 20 seconds later:

#0, #12, #11 try again.  They do a single space pass back and forth.

With seconds left in the 1st, a player way outside the 3 point line takes a WAS and misses.

Throughout the game, you'll notice this cycling pattern.  Where at:

1) At the side top of the 3point line a player decides to pass or drive

2) They pass single spacing

3) when a player in the perfect 2's doesn't get a shot and a player is driving toward them, they cross the key - looking for a rebound.

4) in the background the players on the ball other side are active, outside the key and cycling up to the top to see which side the next play will be on or if it becomes defensive.

Germany didn't win.  It wasn't because of their offense (although they might have been passing a little late for the last half of the game).  It was because they allowed the same two players from USA team to score the majority of the points.

Have fun playing everyone.
