August 24, 2020 Update
We appreciate everyone’s patience as we navigate the challenges of getting our kids safely back into the gyms and playing basketball. Following are status updates for the 2020-2021 basketball season for both Calgary Minor Basketball Association (CMBA) and Calwest Basketball.
Calgary Minor Basketball Association (CMBA) update:
CMBA organizes all the league games that take place between Calwest and the other CMBA zones. Their most recent update may be found at: http://cmba.ab.ca/article/
Condensed version of the update is that no public or Catholic school gyms will be available for rent until at least 2021. CMBA is also cancelling the league for fall 2020.
We will still have some gym rentals from our private facilities and are waiting to see how many hours a week we will be able to access.
We are looking to do a fall session of skills/training/scrimmages within certain age groups and genders depending on how many gym rentals we get. These sessions will follow the Alberta Health Services (AHS) return to play guidelines and will be based on cohorts. This is a dynamic topic and we are having to adjust weekly depending on what we hear from the government.
Calwest Next Steps:
We will be sending more information out on the programs that we will run along with the cost once we have certainty surrounding our gyms. At that point we will open up registration for those that are interested (this will be a new online registration, separate from the $0 wait list registration).
In the meantime, we have shut down our $0 wait list registration for the regular 2020-2021 season. In the event that we are permitted to return to public and Catholic school gyms in January, 2021 and offer a winter season of basketball, we will send out a notification to all of the families who have registered to our 2020-2021 $0 wait list.
We appreciate your patience in these trying times. We want to continue to promote basketball for our youth - but we will do it in a safe manner and follow the guidelines from AHS.
